Newsdate: 17 December 2015Wigan Latics Players at Rainbow Ward

WWL NHS Foundation Trust was delighted to welcome the players of, the town’s football club, Wigan Athletic, to the Rainbow Ward at Wigan Infirmary on Tuesday 15 December.

The Rainbow Ward is the site’s children’s ward. Aiming to bring a little Christmas cheer to children unfortunate enough to be spending December in hospital, the stars of the Latics were warmly received by patients and staff alike.

Bringing sacks full of presents with them, Jason Pearce, Tim Chow, Richard O’Donnell, Reece James, Haris Vuckic and Will Grigg all took the time to chat with the kids whilst handing them their presents. Some lucky young Latics fans were even able to get their shirts signed by the players.

Spending time in hospital at Christmas can be a stressful time for patients, especially for children and the joy on many of their faces made the visit worthwhile. The players also posed for photographs with both staff and patients.

Diane Swindlehurst, Head of Nursing for Children’s and Midwifery Services at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust said: “We are absolutely thrilled that some of the ‘Latics’ players were able to spend some time with the children this December.

“Being in hospital during the festive period can be a very difficult time for a child, and their family, so, together with help from Wigan Athletic, we try our best to raise their spirits at Christmas time.

“Visits like this really help to take the children’s mind off being poorly for a while. The Trust would like to express their huge gratitude to the players, staff and all involved at Wigan Athletic for thinking about the children this Christmas and giving them memories they can take with them.”
