Pre-employment Programme Graduates Honoured at Presentation

Participants in our Pre-employment Programme were honoured at a certificate presentation ceremony held on Thursday 10 March.

The event was held in WWL’s Medical Education Centre at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. It was hosted by the Trust with representatives from Skills for Health Academy North West.

Building on previous success in the past two years, this was our third Pre Employment programme that we have run, in partnership with Skills for Health, Job Centre Plus and Wigan and Leigh College. The aim of the programme is to help unemployed adults by giving them an interesting, educational work placement which will provide them with an excellent work reference in the future.

After attending an opening/recruitment day, successful candidates were asked to undertake a bespoke training course at Wigan and Leigh College. They followed this by taking up a clinical or administrative support role within our Trust. Throughout their time with us, participants were supported by Skills for Health, WWL’s Learning and Development Team and managers within the organisation.

As well as the contacts and references that the graduates were able to pick up, they were also presented with certificates to honour their time spent at WWL.

WWL Chairman, Robert Armstrong, opened the proceedings by welcoming everyone to the presentation and thanked participants for working with our Trust.

“I hope that each of you have gained valuable experience working at our hospital, learning skills that help and equip you for future employment.”

In addition, Mr Armstrong stressed the importance of our Trust Values. He singled out “Compassion” for particular attention, stating it was one of the most important qualities a hospital worker can display.

He finished by saying, “I really want to say thank you, on behalf of the Trust Board, for spending ten weeks of your time with us.”

Pat Perkins, Pre-employment Lead, Skills for Health Academy North West, was the next to speak. She raised awareness of statistics regarding the programme. Of those who take part in the programme, 75% manage to secure a job. Also, 84% have a positive experience with many going on to further training opportunities.

Lorraine Simpson, Pre-employment Coordinator, Skills for Health Academy North West, then took to the stage. Joining her were two graduates from the programme, Mikala Hough and Anne Foy, who shared their experiences of their time with WWL. Both ladies were full of praise for the programme and the lessons they had learnt from it.

The presentation followed, each recipient of a certificate gaining a well-deserved round of applause from those in attendance.  Sarah Montgomery, Head of Learning and Organisational Development, then shared some anonymous manager testimonies, praising those who had taken part in the programme.
