Bags of Toiletries Offer Comfort to Patients

16 August

Members of the Trefoil Guild have generously donated handmade bags filled with toiletries to patients at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL).

The Trefoil Guild is an organisation of former Girlguiding leaders who still want to get involved in good deeds and charitable work in their community. The Comfort Bag donations form part of a heart-warming initiative by Girlguiding North West England to provide supplies to patients who haven’t been able to bring in their own toiletries after finding themselves unexpectedly in hospital.

The Trefoil Guild members, who meet once-a-month, make the bags themselves from wipe clean shower curtain material, before adding small toiletries and personal care items such as shampoo and conditioner, toothbrush and paste, soap, shower gel or lotion, deodorant, hand cream, small packet of tissues, comb and a small notepad and pen or pencil.

The Trefoil Guild has chosen to make the Comfort Bags as part of its charity drive for 2017. From 2018, the initiative will be continued by local Girlguiding packs.

Eileen Hutchings, chairperson of the Trefoil Guild, said: “We all still want to get involved in the community and we support a charity each year. It’s surprising when you first begin as so many people give so generously.”

Andrea Arkwright, Head of Patient and Public Engagement at WWL, said “We are absolutely delighted to receive this very kind donation from the Trefoil Guild. A lot of time and effort has gone into making and preparing the bags and we are grateful that the Guild has chosen our hospital to donate them to. Sometimes patients and relatives are suddenly admitted to hospital and these bags will make their stay much more comfortable until they are able to bring their own toiletries in.”
