Trust rated number one in the country for cancer care referral rates

18 October 2017

Latest figures have shown that Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) has been rated number one in the country for cancer care referrals.

According to the latest published data on performance against three key NHS waiting-time measures, WWL saw 95.7 per cent of patients within 62 days of urgent GP referral, ahead of the 85 per cent target; the national average being 82.6 per cent.

The Trust came out on top against 135 Trusts across the country.

Julie Fletcher, Cancer Services Manager at WWL said: “The latest figures have shown that, for August, 95.7% of WWL cancer patients began their treatment within 62 days of GP referral.

“This is an achievement we are very proud of and we are happy to provide a service for our patients which consistently exceeds the National Cancer Waiting Times Targets.”

WWL’s cancer care figures are testament to the work by the multi-disciplinary teams across the Trust and the work by staff at the Trust’s Cancer Care Centre, made possible by a partnership between WWL, the Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support.

The unit contains:-

-       12 Chemotherapy treatment areas

-       Counselling facilities

-       A complementary therapy suite

-       A Macmillan Information and Support Services

Some chemotherapy treatments which used to be undertaken at the Christie can now take place at Wigan which makes it much easier for patients and reduces travelling time whilst they are undergoing treatment.

A wide range of complementary therapy treatments such as reiki and massage are offered at the centre, which many patients find very helpful and eases some of their symptoms.

The centre is also home to a Macmillan Information and Support service which offers patients, relatives and carers access to up-to-date information at all stages of the cancer pathway, as well as, practical psychological and emotional support.
