Nayyar graduated in 1968. In 1970 he was appointed Senior House Officer (SHO) in Medicine at Wigan Royal Infirmary. After one year as SHO he was promoted to Medical Registrar at Wigan and served in this position for another four years. In 1975, after having passed the MRCP (UK) examination, he did a few locum jobs in the Northwest. In 1976 he was appointed to the Cardiology registrar rotation at the Northwest Regional Cardiac Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital, South Manchester. In 1977 he went to the Cardiology Department at St. Thomas Hospital in London as the Kleinwort Cardiac Research Fellow for one year, and then for six months as Honorary Senior Registrar till May 1979. In February 1979 he was appointed as Consultant in General Medicine and Cardiology to the Wigan and Leigh Health Authority, taking up his present post in July 1979.

Nayyar set up the Cardiology Service in the Trust, starting from a small room at Billinge Hospital in 1979. Now WWL has a first class District Cardiology Service, based at the RAEI site, including exercise laboratories, echocardiogram laboratories and two cardiac catheter laboratories, and a subsidiary department at Leigh Infirmary. There is a healthy cardiac endowment fund, “Dr. Naqvi’s Heart Fund”, set up in 1980. He has taken active part in management, initially being a member of the Wigan and Leigh Health Authority for a number of years. He has been Clinical Director of Medicine, Chairman of the Division of Medicine, and Chairman of various committees in this Authority/Trust. He has also been member of various cardiology committees in the Northwest and until recently was a member of the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cardiac Board and Network, as well as clinical lead of the Northwest Sector of the Network.

Nayyar is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London and Edinburgh, Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology, and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. In 2004 he was appointed Officer of the most excellent Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty, The Queen, for services to Medicine and Cardiology.

He has written many papers, and has presented papers all over the World. He has been Honorary Clinical Teacher at University of Manchester School of Medicine, and British Heart Foundation Lecturer. He is Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of Central Lancashire. He has been MRCP/PACES examiner for many years. He enjoys teaching medical students and junior doctors.

For his services to cardiology, Dr Naqvi was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty, the Queen in 2004. Wigan Council awarded him the Wigan Life Award in 2010 and a Star in Wigan’s Walk of Fame in 2013 for his services to the community of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan.
