Nirmal is on the Specialist Register as an ENT Consultant after higher surgical training in the West Midlands. He was appointed Consultant at WWL in 1999 and his clinical practice encompasses the range of general ENT. He is Clinical Director for Surgery and Director of Medical Education in the Trust. In addition he is an Honorary Professor at Edge Hill University leading to the MCh Otolaryngology course delivered by the Trust.
Over the last 12 years, Nirmal has in conjunction with his colleagues, established a vibrant unit for ENT which is established as a centre for training of ENT surgeons. He is an intercollegiate examiner (since 2005) for the MRCS and DO-HNS exams of the Royal College of Surgeons and has recently been appointed to the national Specialty Advisory Committee (SAC) in Otolaryngology.
Regionally, Nirmal is also Training Programme Director for ENT in the NW Deanery where he is also Chairman for the Specialty Training Committee. Nationally, he is the Honorary Assistant Secretary for ENT-UK.
Nirmal has published over 75 articles in international medical literature and has also supervised several trainees for higher degrees leading to MSc, MCh, MPhil, MD (Universities of Edinburgh, Edge Hill, UCLan and Salford) and is an examiner for University of Dublin, UCLan and Edge Hill. His current research focuses on qualitative studies including work on Patient Reported Outcomes (PROM) and is a key note speaker at the President’s meeting of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, 2013.
