Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust has been awarded NHS Foundation Trust status.  From 1st December 2008, the Trust became known as:

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust.

Chief Executive Andrew Foster says: “This is fantastic news and is a real mark of recognition for the quality of services that we provide to our patients. It means that our Trust is seen as financially sound and having strong relationships with our local partners. It is also a tribute to the hard work of each and every member of staff."

The Trust is now owned by its members – staff and patients – instead of by the Secretary of State for Health. The new Board of Governors, including the four staff governors, will now take up its role.

The Trust's Chairman, Les Higgins says: “Together we did it! Being an NHS Foundation Trust means that our staff, our patients and our public now have more say in the future of our hospitals.  I would like to thank everyone involved, including all our partner organisations and the Strategic Health Authority, for supporting our hospitals and our staff in this wonderful achievement.

Andrew Foster continues “This is an exciting time for healthcare in Wigan and Leigh and the application process has given us the opportunity to raise standards throughout the Trust and created a greater focus on improving patient quality and safety."

NHS Foundation Trusts are still part of the NHS, but now become accountable to their members who are public, staff and governors. The governors have been elected from the public, our staff and local partnership organisations. As an NHS Foundation Trust we will be able to direct our services to the communities which we serve, with freedom to develop new ways of working that reflect local needs and priorities.  This partnership approach allows us more local control of our destiny and finances.  Financial rules for Foundation Trusts are advantageous as we can save and borrow to support plans to invest in our sites and patient services.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust has an elected Council of Governors representing a broad geographical area and skill mix, made up of local people, staff and representatives from partner organisations. The Governors will play an important role in making key decisions affecting the Trust.

The Trust has already recruited over 9,000 staff and public NHS Foundation Trust members. If you or someone you know would like to become a member of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust please telephone or write to:
