On 29th April 1905, the Foundation Stone was laid by Alderman T. R. Greenhough, J.P., C.C., Chairman of the Building Committee. 

The Infirmary was opened on 27th October 1906 by the Mayor (Alderman W. J. Smith J.P.) the event being recorded on a Bronze Tablet, placed in the Entrance Porch.  To meet the ever-growing demand for outpatient services, it was decided in 1944 to inaugurate an Appeal Fund for the provision of a new Outpatient Department at Leigh Infirmary as the Towns War memorial

The Outpatients Department at Leigh is situated near to the town centre and provides outpatient care to residents of the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS catchment area. There are 63 Consultant led clinics and 10 nurse led clinics per week and sees approximately 74,000 patients per annum.

The Department operates Monday to Friday between the hours of 8.00am and 5.30pm.

The centre provides the following range of clinics:

Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinics:

  • Antenatal/Post natal

  • Chest (Thoracic)
  • Care of the Elderly
  • Diabetes
  • Endoscopy
  • Haematology
  • Lipid Clinics
  • Ophthalmology
  • Neuro - Surgery 
  • Neurology
  • Paediatrics
  • Renal

Within the Outpatient Department there are five clinic areas supported by the following on site services, X-Ray, Cardiology, Phlebotomy and Audiology. In addition there are limited Pathology services provided on the site supporting the Haematology clinic.

The X-Ray and Phlebotomy Departments will also hold appointment led sessions for patients referred by their GPs for x-rays and blood taking. Please note at the moment the phlebotomy department is operating on an appointment only basis for all patients except those who require urgent blood tests.

Physiotherapy hold clinics within the Health Centre which can be found to the right of the Hospitals main entrance. 

A Pharmacy is located in the Health Centre to the right of the entrance. 

Non-clinical support staff are based at the centre to provide portering, domestic, general office and patient services.

We have a dedicated team of volunteers and buddies situated at the main entrance to the hospital who provide an excellent support service to patients, relatives and departmental staff. 

A café is situated near the front entrance providing drinks and light snacks.

Car Parking

Car parking is available on a Pay and Display basis. It applies to all cars parks and includes disabled areas. The cost is:
  • Up to 30 minutes drop off  Free
  • Up to two hours   £2.50
  • Between two and four hours £4.50
  • Over four hours   £6.00 

Please bring some change for the pay and display machines as they don't accept notes.

Car Parking Concession Criteria

  • Any oncology patient who attends the Trust for frequent regular treatment will receive free parking for the length of their treatment. This criterion was agreed by Macmillan Cancer Support
  • Any patients attending clinics at the Trust for a minimum of one day a week for an extensive period will receive free parking
  • Visitors of patients hospitalised for more than 2 weeks (14 days), will be offered free parking for the remainder of the patient's stay from day 15 onwards
