In May 2002 the Thomas Linacre Centre opened its doors to Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust's outpatients.

Thomas Linacre was Rector of the Wigan Parish for five years from 1519 up to his death in 1524. He was the founder and first President of the Royal College of Physicians and was also royal physician to Henry VIII.

This has been a forward thinking and innovative development as the Old Grammar School is a Grade II listed building and much work has been done to preserve the aesthetics of the period. £7 million has been invested to transform the building. The outside has retained its famous clock tower and the new windows and doors have been made in the traditional style. The brickwork has also been renovated. In contrast the inside is state of the art with diagnostic suites and tasteful décor.

The Outpatients centre provides outpatient care to residents of the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS catchment area, with 96 Consultant led clinics per week and treating over 100,000 patients per annum.
